D-Day looms for 12-day rule

The EU Council of Transport Ministers must support the European Parliament's almost unanimous vote on reintroducing the 12-day derogation for European coach tours, says the International Road Transport Union (IRU).

It is now up to the Council of Transport Ministers meeting, to be held this Thursday and Friday (12-13 June), to support the Parliament’s move. The IRU has welcomed the European Parliament’s strong call, with 591 plenary votes for - and only 18 against - to bring back the 12-day continuous driving derogation for drivers engaged in international coach tours in Europe.

The IRU – which has 180 member associations in 73 countries - has reiterated its call on EU institutions to implement an urgent solution to introduce a ’12-day’ derogation before 1 January 2009 at the latest.
